Hate em' or Love em'

By Kirsten Swanson

By now, if you are in any contact with the outside world, I am sure you have seen Derek Jeter’s performance after being “hit by a pitch” during Wednesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays. “Hit by a pitch” is in quotations because according to the home plate umpire Lance Barksdale
Jeter was hit on his left arm, but in reality, the ball clearly hit his bat.

After the game Jeter jokingly admitted to acting, saying it wasn’t it big deal since they didn’t win the game.

Fans across the country have many different opinions about Jeter’s acting skills. One on hand, some fans are calling him a cheater and a liar, mostly Red Sox or Rays fans. Others are saying that he did what he had to do for his team, and it if the umpire wanted to grant him first base, then so be it. Personally, I think it’s hilarious, and a great effort by Jeter, but that is mainly because I have always been a fan and have tremendous respect for him as a player.

Joe Maddon, manager of the Rays, even said, “If our guys had did it, I would have applauded that. It's a great performance on his part.”

Because Derek Jeter has been the face of baseball for quite some time now, and has always seemed to be respectful of the game, most people don’t have a problem with it.  He just wanted to win. But if say, A-Rod would have done it, it would have been called bush league and obnoxious, mainly because he’s one of the most hated players in the league right now.

All of these different viewpoints had me wondering, what beloved Philly sports players would we hate if they were on another team?

Jimmy Rollins- With all of his proclamations and swagger, J-Roll is embraced in the city of Philadelphia. We see him as a hero, always waiting for him to say something that we can quote over and over again, example “We’re the team to beat.” However, if he was on the Mets, we would think he was obnoxious, loud-mouthed and full of himself.

Shane Victorino- Shane isn’t one to back down from a fight, always being the first one out of the dugout when words are being exchanged on the field. He fought back when Kuroda was throwing at him in the 2008 NLCS, and after being ejected in centerfield after throwing up his hands, he charged the umpire like bull. Bottom line is, if Shane was on another team, we would view him perhaps similarly to the way we view Nyjer Morgan, but instead, we think he is tough instead of hot-headed.

Chase Utley- Chase is just Chase. He is everything a fan wants in a player. He hustles, he’s dedicated, and we can always depend on him. Although he is not as vocal as J-Roll, he also has a sort of swagger that is seen by Phils fans as being awesome, but by others could be seen as smugness.

Danny Carcillo- He has the crooked, toothless smile, the long hair, and of course the stache. Carcillo is always more than happy to engage in a brawl and exchange kind words in the penalty box, things that Flyers fans adore. If Danny was on the Devils or Penguins, we would see all his punches and checks as cheap shots and boo him mercifully.

Chris Pronger- Being a 6’6 tough defenseman, it’s almost impossible not to be loved by Flyer fans. In the Stanley Cup Finals when Pronger “stole” the game puck, we praised him for it. When he talks smart with the media, we think it’s hilarious. Now think if Alex Ovechkin or Sidney Crosby would have did that to us, wouldn’t be so funny would it?

Desean Jackson- In his short time with the Eagles, he has already gotten into some trouble for what he says, mainly via twitter. Eagles fans thought it was amazing when he tweeted “it’s all good we gonna sting” the Cowboys. Now let’s say Tony Romo would have said that about the Eagles, yeah you know how that would have blown over.

Allen Iverson- Although A.I. kind of wore out his welcome here in Philadelphia, at the time we all thought his practice comments were hilarious. We welcomed him with open arms last December despite everything that happened.  But let’s face it, if he wasn’t a longtime Sixer, you would hate him.

So, just think of all the players you currently hate across the sports world. Now think, if they were on your teams, would you stll hate them?

As the old saying goes, you can either love them or hate them, no in between.
