Eagles Rookie Update

By G. Emrich

For those of you who don’t have the time to read every practice summary and related article on the Eagles official website, and read every Eagles related article, both local and national, and talk to people who have been out to training camp, well, you probably have real jobs and your ignorance is understandable.  That’s why I’m here, so here’s a quick rookie update for everyone.

Brandon Graham DE-  doing well by all accounts, everything the Eagles expected him to be at this point.

Nate Allen S-  not hearing the buzz you’d like to hear at this point.  I’m hearing words like “good” and “steady”, which is typically code for “not as impressive as hoped for”.  He’s a smart kid, and has been admittedly thrust into a tough position, so he might be over thinking things a little right now.  All in all it’s way too early to draw any conclusions outside of the fact that he’s not wowing anyone right now.

Daniel Te’o-Nesheim DE-  good buzz so far, high motor, athletic, feisty, Philly kind of guy.

Trevard Lindley CB-  solid buzz as well, not spectacular, but making plays and running with the 2’s right now.

Keenan Clayton LB-  no buzz, absolutely nothing.  I haven’t heard or read anything about him, which is not a good sign.  He’s obviously going to have to fight for a roster spot at this point.

Mike Kafka QB-  buzz galore.  He’s exceeded all expectations, showing better than expected arm strength and an understanding of the offense rarely shown this early by a rookie QB.  He’s all but locked up a roster spot and the 3rd QB position already.

Clay Harbor TE-  plenty of buzz and already pushing for the backup position behind Celek.  He’s shown all the athletic skills he showcased in college and is a better blocker than expected.  Ingram has been a disappointment so far in camp and Harbor may have already moved ahead of him.

Ricky Sapp DE-  no buzz.  He’s in a tough spot, undersized DE playing for a 4-3 team that has a ton of DE’s on the roster.  He’ll have to impress during the preseason to have any shot of making the team.

Riley Cooper WR-  one of the stars of training camp so far.  He’s catching everything and proving to be an even better athlete than expected.  At this point he seems to be in excellent position to make the team, which is no small feat given where he was drafted and the depth the Eagles have at the WR position.

Charles Scott RB-  mixed reviews.  It looks like he’s fighting with Buckley for a roster spot and a position as the 3rd RB.  Buckley is reported to be slightly ahead of Scott right now, but it’s a fluid situation.  He’s also getting some reps at FB, which can either be construed as a good thing or a bad thing.  My guess is this roster battle goes down to the very end.

Jamar Chaney LB-  Clayton was the higher draft pick, Chaney is the better player right now.  He’s performed well thus far and has a decent chance of making the team if he makes plays once the preseason games get going.

Jeff Owens DT-  a little buzz here.  Again, looks like he’ll fight for a roster spot, depends how he plays in the preseason.

Kurt Coleman S-  good early buzz, but dropped off a little recently.  He’s at a position without a lot of depth, which bodes well for his chances of making the team.

All in all, the draft class, 13 in all, has done very well so far.  The Eagles already have one of the youngest teams in football, and with at least seven rookies looking good for roster spots and another four pushing hard, this team could be VERY young once the 53 man roster is announced.

I’ll be back with another update soon.
