Put Me in Coach

By Kirsten Swanson

“Put me in coach I’m ready to play today, look at me I can be centerfield..err right field”

That is the song of the day for Phillies newest Major Leaguer, OF Domonic Brown. After Shane Victorino left last night’s game early because of a strained oblique, Phillies fans everywhere were hoping that they would finally get a chance to see Brown’s talent. They got their wish, Victorino on the DL, Brown called up.

Ever since the Phillies troubles started in early June, almost every fan has recited the words “call up Domonic Brown.” This is because he is certainly the best prospect in the Phillies farm system, and could be the best prospect in all of baseball.

General manager, Ruben Amaro has repeatedly said that Domonic Brown has not spent enough time in the minors to be ready for the big league. Splitting his time in 2010 between Reading & Lehigh Valley, Brown has put up a .327 batting average, 20 homeruns and 68 RBIS, sure sounds like he is more than ready to me.

Well, Amaro doesn’t have a choice now. With Victorino on the 15 day DL and September roster expansions coming up soon, it looks like Brown is here to stay for awhile. Brown’s call up and Shane’s injury also puts to rest all of those trade rumors swirling around Jayson Werth. Werth is more than likely to move over to center with Brown filling in at right field.

All things aren’t peachy keen however. The lineup will certainly take a hit without Victorino considering Utley is still out and Rollins is day to day with a bruised left foot. However, with a 6 game winning streak cutting the Braves NL east lead in half, and the bats finally starting to show some life, if Brown is all he is cracked up to be, I expect some fun times down at Citizens Bank Park.

Let the Dom Brown era begin!
