At-Bat Songs

By K. Swanson

For most people across the country, when the song “Kashmir”comes on, the furthest thing from their mind is baseball. But for Phillies fans, we know the classic rock song as Chase Utley’s At-Bat music. Working at Citizens Bank Park over the past three seasons, I look forward to hearing what new Lil’ Wayne song J-roll will come out to or the familiar sounds of Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin. At-bat songs not only get the players juiced up, they get the crowd hyped and give us a glimpse of what the players like.

This got me thinking. If other sports had "at-bat" music, what song would fit some of our phavorite Philly players, present and past? So I decided to have some fun with it.

Eagles
Michael Vick- "Who Let the Dogs Out" by Baha Men

Now I know this choice is blatantly obvious but I couldn't resist. It's still perfectly fitting and would sure have the crowd involved…might have some complaints from PETA but that's the risk I'm willing to take.

Donovan McNabb- “Puke” by Eminem

Sure,McNabb has led the Eagles to five NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl, but one of the biggest things he will be remembered for is the multiple puking episodes, although he still denies it occurred during the Super Bowl.

Terrell Owens-“You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon

Who can forget the obnoxious touchdown celebrations, the commercial with the nearly naked Desperate Housewife, the press conference in his driveway while he performed sit-ups, and more recently his new reality show. According to T.O the earth doesn’t revolve around the sun, it revolves around him.

 Flyers

Jeff Carter-“Blame it (On the Alcohol)” Jamie Fox

Jeff and his buddy Richie are known as much for their rendezvous throughout Old City & Sea Isle as they are for their skills on the ice.Although I do not believe that he slept with Scott Hartnell’s wife,I’m sure he has had many experiences where he “blamed it on the alcohol”.

Dave Schultz-“If I had a Hammer” Peter, Paul, and Mary

Recently, the organists for the Atlanta Braves started playing songs for the opposing teams, mostly a play on their names or nicknames, which I think is awesome. Now there may be a million songs that can describe the way Schultz used to just beat down on opponents, but after all he is Dave “The Hammer” Schultz.

Eric Lindros-“What Might Have Been” by Lone star or “Keep Ya Head Up” by Tupac

When Eric Lindros entered the league, he was supposed to be the next great thing. Although he didn’t fully live up to the hype, he did accomplish a lot in little time. However, he forgot one of the basic rules of hockey, always skate with your head up.

Sixers

Charles Barkley-“The Gambler” Kenny Rogers

Sir Charles has been a controversial fan favorite since the early 80s,and still is today. He is outspoken and doesn’t seem to hide anything from the public light, especially his gambling problem.Charles has lost millions, but he doesn’t see it as a problem since he can “afford it.”…bad ass

Allen Iverson-“Practice Makes Perfect” by Cute Is What We Aim For

Many say he ranks as one of the five best Sixers ever, but what he is most known for is his hatred for practice. “We ain’t talkin about a game, we talkin bout practice, not a game, not a game, practice.”

Julius Erving-“Somebody Get Me a Doctor” Van Halen

Julius Erving is one of Philly’s biggest sport icons. Just one mention of“the Doc” or “Dr.J” and you instantly see his 6’7 body nailing that lay-up from behind the hoop in the 1980 finals.

Sure, there are probably tons of better picks for these guys but hey I gave it a shot. What would you pick for your favorite athletes or better yet, what would be your “at-bat” song?
