Bits and Pieces

By G. Emrich

-  Another night, another stellar performance by Brad Lidge.  I received an email from a friend last night that said simply, "F--k Brad Lidge!".  I've seen t-shirts with "Lidge Happens" plastered on the front, and when my two-year-old craps his pants I call it a "Lidge", or say "honey, he Lidged his pants again".  The bottom line- when your closer's name is being used as a synonym for s--t in a two-year-old's diaper, it's a sure sign there's a problem.

-  Michael Vick, we hardly knew ye..... perhaps.  If it turns out that Vick did in fact leave just before the shooting, and consequently lied about the timeline (or remembered incorrectly as I'm sure he will argue), then there's a decent chance that the Eagles will cut ties with him.  However, it's probably not the slam dunk decision that most fans would think it would be.  The team has no other legitimate backup QB on the team (there's no way they go into the season with Kafka as their #2), so they would have to have a replacement for Vick in place before making the decision to release him.

-  A quick view opposite to the mainstream regarding this Albert Haynesworth situation.  He's a clown, no doubt, not worth debating.  But in his defense, playing nose tackle in a 3-4 system isn't a whole lot of fun.  The position is often reserved for big bodies who take up space (the idea being the tackle engages two blockers, leaving the LB's free to attack and make tackles, simplified, but that's the gist of it).  And as far as I know the Redskins have not contradicted his assertion that they promised him they would run a 4-3, or his claim that he had made it clear that playing in a 4-3 system was important to him.  So for a moment let's forget about the money, because it's not actually relevant to the discussion at hand (he was going to get to paid a ton anywhere he signed).  The bottom line is that the Redskins promised him something they shouldn't have, and then promptly reneged on that promise one year after they signed him.  Now, to be clear, I'm not defending his actions, just his right to be pissed off.  He signed a contract.  He should feel a responsibility to his teammates, and he should be acting like a professional and not a 350 pound child.  My only issue with the reaction to his recent actions and all the media coverage surrounding him is that no one is criticizing the Redskins as well.  Personally, I don't ever pass up a chance to criticize the Redskins.
