The Old Man

By G. Emrich
I don't know if Jamie Moyer has a nickname (in fact when you google "Jamie Moyer nickname" you don't get anything worth repeating here), but it's time we gave him one. Anyone who is 47 years-old and still striking out players who are young enough to be his all-grown-up children or even his grandchildren (I assume this happens in Kentucky or West Virginia from time to time) deserves a nickname. Suggestions are welcome.
Anyway, time to put Moyer's current season in some kind of perspective. The average sports fan below the age of 30 most likely has no real appreciation for what Moyer is accomplishing at age 47. 20-something's wake up feeling loose, eat what they want when they want to, and can drink heavily for days at a time. When you hit 30 all that joy goes out the window. I'm 33, and I think I literally aged ten years on my 30th birthday. After 30 you will find yourself saying "I'm old" at least once a day, for reasons you never would have thought possible in your 20's.
Of course, when you're 33 and you say "I'm old" around someone who's 45+, they understandably laugh in your face, and typically respond with some comment along the lines of "if you think it's bad now....." or "it only gets worse". The bottom line is that no amount of working out or staying in shape can completely halt the effects of aging (see Ibanez, Raul). So for Jamie Moyer to be having a very solid season at 47 is a remarkable feat, perhaps something we won't see again for a long time, and certainly something to be admired and acknowledged.
A brief look at Moyer's season is in order. He has remarkably not had a single no-decision in 15 starts this year (9-6). In his last ten starts he has a 3.68 ERA, and a 2.49 ERA in starts that didn't happen on June 11th against Boston (how can we forget the rare 1IP/9H/9ER debacle of a performance). He's gone at least six innings in all but two starts and averages just under 100 pitches per outing. And he's had most of his success recently, when the Phillies desperately needed it.
So hats off to you Jamie Moyer. I'm just hoping to be a normally functioning human being at age 47. Keep it up old man. There it is, his nickname. I knew it would come to me. From now on I will refer to Jamie Moyer as Old Man Moyer. Keep it up Old Man Moyer. I will now attempt to get out of this chair without cracking my knees or pulling my back out.......god I'm old.

For the record, 47 is NOT old! I'm 48 and I oughtta know! LOL!
Funny article!
