A Tough Loss to Swallow

By G. Emrich

So much of me wants to be able toprepare abeautiful, flowing piece about the United States World Cup team andtheirdramatic and inspiring performance over the past few two weeks.  But myheart isn't in it today.

Losing is never fun.  Watching yourteam loseto a better team is difficult, but something you can get over quickly. Watching your team lose when you feel that you should have won is theworst.

Please don't misinterpret what I'msaying. Ghana deserved to win.  They didn't win because they were lucky (whichhappens in sports far more than people like to admit), and they weren'tvastlyoutplayed by the American squad.  But one is still left feeling that theUS did more to lose the game than Ghana did to win it.  After thefirst 20 minutes or so the US controlled the flow of the game, and bothgoals Ghana scored were much more a result of poor play by the US thangood playby Ghana.

And so we're left with that "what if"feeling inthe pit of our stomachs.  What if we hadn't had two separate brutaldefensive breakdowns?  What if we had won and gone on to face adecidedlygood but not great Uruguay team?  What if we had pulled an upset in thesemifinals......?  It's a horriblefeeling.

Ultimately, this team's legacy willundoubtedly beLandon Donovan's already legendary goal in stoppage time on Wednesday, andthat's the way it should be.  Hopefully in time I'll forget that itcouldhave been so much more.
